4K on the Cheap: Ultra HD TV Is Almost Ready for Mainstream

In our tests, the VIZIO performed admirably against the Samsung on a few fronts. Its blacks are incredible. This TV could teach Voldemort a thing or two about the dark arts. It’s got a technology called local dimming, also available on many premium HD sets, that heightens contrast by turning off the backlight on portions of the screen that don’t need it, like the bars on the top and bottom of a widescreen movie. The VIZIO gets better contrast because it has LEDs right behind the screen, instead of on the side like many other TVs.
