- It Plays Blu Ray Discs ... Yes It Does! Review by Tony
-
I was torn between a Sharp whose stock number I forget and this machine. Both were being offered under $100 at the end of January. H.H.Gregg offered the Sharp. My BJ's club had the Vizio in stock.
To tell the truth, I was torn between both machines. I liked the idea that I might be able to watch Netfllix movies and YouTube videos on the Sharp, versus a paucity of said activity on the Vizio. What turned the tide were the reviews against the Sharp.
Many new owners were having problems with load-up time for the Blu-Ray discs; not so. I inserted the disc and within a minute the menu was up on the screen and the disc ready to play. Others complained that the Sharp had difficulty recognizing a regular DVD; once again, not so. I loaded one of my favorite comedies of all time, "Harlem Nights". What the Vizio did for the older DVD disc was nothing short of incredible. The colors were pure and the rendition on the screen was crisp and clear. In addition, what the Vizio did for the rendition of the soundtrack was amazing. I run the machine through a Yamaha 5.1 receiver; nothing fancy. The speakers are Sony columns and the surround is supplied by a three speaker set which came from The Speaker Company. It really is good enough for me; and with the Vizio orchestrating the Dolby, it is better than more than enough! I inserted a Blu-Ray copy of the Phantom of the Opera. What magnificent crispness of detail; and the sound ..... it makes my skin prickle just to think about the booming bass and the clear highs. Fantastic!
You won't hear or even notice the Vizio working. It is completely silent. The front is devoid of all bright lights; none are needed.
As with the other reviews, I also have qualms about the remote. They could have done a lot better. My feeling is that they made the angle of reception at the machine just a little to acute. One MUST truly aim the remote at the player to get it to work. A few inches left or right of the target and nothing happens. That is what some reviewers are seeing as 'difficulty in mashing the buttons'.
If you want a machine that plays discs faithfully, quietly, and gives a beautiful rendition of cinematic sound in the living room then this Vizio unit is definitely for you. I have it mated to my Samsung 42" Plasma. The precision of the player is striking; especially at the price. This is a no lose situation.(Posted on 2/14/10)

- Needs a few tweaks, but awesome player Review by Scott

I bought the VBR110 at Costco for $99.00 over Thanksgiving and have been wearing it out ever since!
Pros: Fast loading time, excellent picture quality (on my Vizio SV420XVT), suberb value, HDMI cable included
Cons: Remote is "iffy", menu is "always on" (I want to see the cool Vizio logo!), no firmware updates via ethernet, no frills
First of all, let me say that NONE of the cons should turn you off from this player. They don't do anything to detract from the purpose this machine was built - to play Blu-ray discs. On that front this player wins hands down.
Set-up was a breeze. Before I took down my old (component) DVD player I put a copy of a DVD I happen to own two copies of in each player. I was stunned at how well the Vizio "upscaled" the regular DVD. It was like the difference between watching cable TV and antenna TV. VERY marked difference.
On the Blu-ray front, I've heard many "horror" stories about "extreme" load times on Blu-ray discs on inexpensive players. Not on this one. You put in the Blu-ray and within a minute, you are watching a movie. Longer than a DVD? Sure. Annoying? Not at all.
On the con side, the remote isn't that great. I find myself mashing the buttons several times to make them work, and it just doesn't fit as well in my hand as my Vizio TV remote does. Would have liked to see something better there.
I'm also surprised that you can't update the firmware from the ethernet connection. The only options are memory stick or disc.
When you turn the player on, the menu is always up, hiding the cool Vizio logo behind it. You can turn it off, but it always comes back up. Small detail, but something I would like to be different.
It doesn't have any of the "extras" you get with higher end players (YouTube, Pandora, Netflix, etc.). Who knows if that will come in a firmware update or not (it looks like the buttons are on the remote to support it). Certainly not critical, especially for the price.
The bottom line? Buy this player. Save your money on a $200-$300 machine (unless you HAVE to have Netflix, Pandora, etc.). If you are looking for a machine that plays Blu-ray discs, and plays them well, this is the best value out there.(Posted on 2/5/10)
- Great Player Review by Mr. Mr

I have owned plenty of dvd players, Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, etc. And they always have such basic design errors either in rendition quality or user interface, it makes you wonder if anyone has any common sense. Finally I've found an intelligently designed product that is just great.
The VBR110 is a killer. I bought one to upgrade to Blu-ray and liked it so much I bought a second one for the theater. One is set up with a 47" Vizio LCD on HDMI and the other is on a Sanyo PLV-Z2 projector using Component. They're both smashing in clarity, color rendition and depth, and the sound is top-shelf, too.
The remote is a bit large and button feel is too stiff for me, but to balance those issues Vizio has designed an intuitively simple to use layout that other manufacturers should go to school on. [Especially Søny.]
The player itself is a very solid unit. It is big enough to dissipate heat, of substantial heft to resist vibration and stiff enough that the weight of other components sitting on it won't affect it. It is, in short, 'old school' design, like before the world was overrun by cheap Chinese crap, but applied to cutting edge technology. The cosmetic design is also pleasingly spare and supports the impression of professional engineering embodied in this player.
Vizio has really put some engineering effort into this unit, and it shows. For $119 at Costco it is an insane buy. I can't tell you how happy I am with Vizio's design ethic and results.(Posted on 1/28/10)

- Vizio is king Review by Visual Junkie Mel

I had just picked up this particular model & I am virtually amazed of its features. My brother-in-law suggested getting Vizio's products when it came to great High Definition LCDs so I assumed the same for Bluray players as well. Vizio blew the competition out the water with this product. The picture quality of it is amazing. Clean, crisp, details show on screen. Sound quality enhances the movies so much it seems as though its happening inside the house. You can even play movies from your flash drive. I popped in the Bluray version of Pirates of the Caribbean and the player made me feel like I was watching a LIVE show. Even popping in a Standard DVD of 300 looked a 3D feast. It made me want to go through my entire DVD collection again. I surely got my money's worth. It has more quality loaded features and with 1/3rd of the price from other brand-names. Samsung was my first choice. Now it'll always be Vizio.

- great unit Review by feeDogg

I really like this unit. one nice feature is you can just turn unit off remove disc insert later and boom unit knows exactly where you left off. But on some blue ray movies it does not do that all the time which can be frustrating especially if you pause for a length of time to i.e. use the bathroom or answer the phone the unit will just go into to screen saver mode which is good but then with out warning power will just shut off. Overall really good unit though. If anyone knows any tricks with this unit to correct some off these what i call issues to me, please let me know thanks Alot D. Feeman

- Future Support? Review by John G

This Bluray has worked pretty well for me. It has played multiple formats without a hitch. DVDs, Bluray, home brew AVCHD movies. Playing via USB interface no problems. Quick start time. I am hoping that there will be a firmware patch that could enable VIA app. If that happens it would be awesome.. Great picture nice playback good value.

I am really glad I purchased this player. I received a defective remote and called Vizio to complain. They are sending a new one. I also own a harmony 659 universal remote, so I programmed it for the Vizio and was able to use my player. This is a fantastic unit. It blows away the Phillips and the Sony I use to own. It loads up much faster than either one of them and gives my 55 inch Vizio a great picture.

I just purchased the Blu-ray player yesterday and used it for the first time last evening. Easy set up and terrific picture. This is a good value product. I own a Vizio HD television and the two together are great!

Purchased this player yesterday for a very reasonable price and all that I can say is "wow"! The features and picture on this player blows my much more expensive Sony Player away. The loading of the discs are so much faster than many of the units that my Friends own and the 7.1 surround adds the cherry on top. Thanks Vizio...this unit is a perfect compliment to my 47 inch Vizio LCD.

I was given as a gift a 37" 120hz Vizio TV and I decided to add the blu ray player as a gift to myself. After watching the Titanic, I made an excellent choice. Great quality!

I just picked this up at Walmart. I had a gift card for $30 to put towards it. The picture is fantastic and I have an old TV. Even the sound is better. I'm glad I did it. Now it's time to pick up a new TV.

- You won't need to buy blu-ray DVDs Review by pnp1020
-
I bought this unit over Samsung and Sony because it beat them both on price. It automatically upconverts your regular DVD's with astounding quality...you won't have to buy the blu-ray version as it plays the regular DVDs very well. Bonus features includes: 1.) it will play mp3s and 2.) you can use your TV as a slide show player for JPGs. Downside is no wireless network connection, but then again, I only paid half of what those units go for.

Trust me I am a person that likes my brands and was kind of scared when I opened this one under the tree but extremely glad I did!!
